winner this hour on cnn. good morning and welcome to "early start," i'm sor ride da sam lynn. >> i'm ashley banfield. we're bringing you the news from a to z. it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. we begin this morning with breaking news. we're just learning brand new information on that nigerian plane that crashed into a residential neighborhood in lagos. the airline's director of flight operations confirming the pilot was american. we have no idea how long that pilot worked for the airline. nigeria's president declaring three days of national mourning and ordering a full investigation. all 153 people on board were killed in yesterday's disaster, and at least ten people on the ground died as well. firefighters and police struggled to put out all of the flames. there wasn't any water left more than three hours after that crash. residents helped carry fire hoses and plastic buckets of

water to the burning wreckage. into's going to be a rough day pretty much in the financial markets after the dismal jobs report came out on friday. indicating markets are expected to open down as well here. a lot of volatility, uncertainty in the air in the markets around the world today already. this very early hour. alison kosik is in for christine romans today. we have a lot of things on the menu for why this is happening. >> one of the things that's dictating are the asian markets which are down quite a lot right now. we did see our futures recover just a bit. here is what i want to tell you about. remember the dow, 13,000? remember the big rallies we were talking snabt the dow erased all its gains for the year. you see the chart, the line going all the way down. that's where we are now. a lot of what we lost, interestingly enough was just within the past month. there's a lot weighing on the markets. investors are worried about a

lot of things, a slowdown in europe and china, not to mention right here in the u.s. after the dismal jobs report that showed in may we only had 69,000 jobs added to the workforce. the thing is, the economy is growing, but it's not growing fast enough because you see other indications, too. manufacturing slowed down. consumer spending was up in april. it's rising faster than incomes. that's not what you want to see. there's also another thing weighing on the economy, here what's known as the fiscal cliff. that's when you'll see the tax cuts expire, meaning higher rates are going to go into effect. more than $100 billion in automatic spending cuts. they'll go into effect as well. lots of cuts at the pentagon. the problem with this is you'll see all this stuff happening all at once. what the congressional budget office says is this will take $500 billion out of the economy. they're predicting if this fiscal cliff happens all at once by early next year, you'll see the economy going into a recession. this is from the cbo.

that's the bad stuff. there are a few bright spots i want to end on. gas prices are falling. you're seeing that happen because oil prices are also tumbles, right now below $82 a barrel. that's good news for our pocketbooks obviously, obviously not for the right reasons, because the reason you're seeing oil prices fall is because the expectation that demand will be less as we see the economy here slow down and the economies overseas slow down. if history is our guide, we've seen this for a couple of years now where we start off really strong in the year and it slows down and we have a really rough summer and we have recovery. the problem is we're seeing this over and over for the past two to three years and you're seeing politicians really seize on this like mitt romney's senior campaign adviser. listen to what he said over the weekend. >> it's not just the devastatingly weak jobs report we got on friday. it was also the revision in gdp downward, drop in consumer confidence, increase in unemployment claims.

it's not that we don't think this president is trying. i think he is. it's just that his policies are not working. >> so it's an election year. no surprise you're seeing romney's campaign seize on the moment. there's one more bright spot i didn't mention, mortgage rates. mortgage rates are really low. we're seeing the housing market may have hit bottom, at least prices. maybe we'll see a little recovery there. you have to hope that will bring up the economy. if you're trying to glean the bright spots out, i tried to do that this morning. >> the mortgage rates we're hearing could go even lower this summer. >> that could be good news for the housing market, if you can qualify. five minutes past the hour. george zimmer marn back behind bars in florida. the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with murdering trayvon martin turned himself in last night. he was forced out of hiding after the judge revoked his bail saying zimmerman misled the court about his finances.

his attorney says zimmerman is living in fear. >> he's worried about himself, his wife, his family, everybody who has to be in hiding because of the enormous anger and frustration and hatred that has spurred from this case. >> attorney mark o'mara plans to file for another bond hearing today. investigators are trying to figure out what caused an air tanker to crash while fighting a wildfire along if nevada-utah border. two pilots were killed in the accident. they were dropping fire retardant on the flames when their tanker went down yesterday afternoon. it was loaded with 1600 gallon offense fuel and 2,000 gallons of water and fire retardant. the 5,000 acre fire began burning friday night after a lightning strike. we have central mexico under attack. according to a plog that publishes information about the mexican drug war, armed men

entered the center last night and fired at patients killing eight people and injuring eight others. the attack is the latest in a bunch of gruesome incidents. just last month authorities found the decapitated and dismembered bodies of 49 people along a highway. hot off the presses, a just-released cnn/orc poll showing president obama outperforming mitt romney on the favorability scale. with five months to go before the election, let's take a look at the numbers. the president with a favorable rating of 56% among voters. mitt romney eight points back at 48%. a member of a doomsday cult responsible for an attack on the tokyo subway has been taken into custody after 17 years on the run. a tip led police to 40-year-old naoko kiochi.

been released. we can tell you at least ten people on the ground were also killed in this plane crash. nigeria's president is declaring three days of national mourning and is ordering a full investigation into the crash. firefighters and police struggled to put out the planes. there are very few fire trucks stationed in lagos. residents had to carry buckets of water to try to help put out the flames. global markets in full retreat. european and asian stocks tumbling on concerns of the debt crisis, that it's deepening and china's economy is slowing. most are reacting to the jobs market in the u.s. on friday. u.s. stock futures are down right now which means stocks here are expected to open lower this morning. in just a few hours, a jury in philadelphia is set to resume deliberations in a priest sex abuse trial. monsignor william lynn is accused of transferring priests to ear parishes.

his co-defendant james brennan is accused in the attempted rape of a 14-year-old boy. jury selection set to begin in the trial of jerry sandusky. the 68-year-old former penn state coach is accused of sexually abusing ten boys over a 14-year period. the judge denied a request for a delay in the case. police in california are investigating pablo sandoval in an alleged sexual assault. authorities say the incident occurred friday at a resort in northern california. sandoval is said to be cooperating fully with the investigation. that all-star third baseman is currently on the disabled list and recovering from a hand injury. an international manhunt heating up for a self-proclaimed porn star. police in paris, france, are investigating several reported sightings of luka maniata.

he's accused of mailing the body parts to the headquarters of two canadian political parties. the tables are turned on a so-called zombie prank center in miami. take a look at the video. the city has been on edge ever since a homeless man's face was mostly chewed off in a bizarre attack last night. this shows a young man dressed up running and scaring people. at the end of the clip things change decidedly when a group of teenagers decides to chase him down himself and one of them appears to be holding a gun. in seattle a sanitation worker turns hero. jeff black burn was driving a garbage truck, he started honking his horn, blocked the intersection from on coming traffic and jumped out to save the baby. the modest driver says he was

george zimmerman has surrendered to authorities no florida. it comes after a judge revoked his bail saying zimmerman and his wife weren't particularly truthful about their finances when his original bail was set. zimmerman has been out and in hiding for the past six weeks. cnn's martin savidge is following the developments and is live in sanford, florida. so where did this new sort of revelation of truthiness actually end upcoming out? >> reporter: it came out actually on friday. that's when the state actually made a motion to revoke the bond asking for the bond to be revoked for george zimmerman saying he and the family had not been fully hon northwest the disclosure of how much money they had. they said they were broke and

turns out they had over $135,000 in a bank account as a result of donations made online. the judge was pretty angry to hear or read transcripts of george zimmerman speaking to his wife from jail, apparently talking about that money. yet in court he didn't even say they had that money. but let's talk about yesterday. george zimmerman shows up at 1:45, about 45 minutes before his deadline imposed by the judge. it was a rather clandestined way that he turned himself in. here is the sheriff describing the scene. >> george zimmerman met two members of the sheriff's office in the area of lake mary at i-4, was placed into custody, transported to the correctional facility. he is being booked and processed as per judge lester's order. he'll be held on a no-bond status.

>> now, one of the issues that has come up, of course, is credibility here because if george zirmer man was lying about the money, as the state maintains, what else could he be lying about? his attorney, mark o'mara knows that's a problem. he spoke about that yesterday. >> there's a credibility question that now needs to be sort of rehabilitated by explaining away what they were thinking when they did what they did, if that's what happened. we'll address it. >> reporter: mark o'mara says he's going to ask for a new bond hearing today. when that hearing will actually take place remains to be seen. ashley? >> all right, marty. clearly we'll be in court again and real soon. do we expect anything else to come out in court other than the information that we're talking about, the money? any other kind of evidence that may end upcoming out in discovery? >> two things. one. we expect to hear those jailhouse recordings made from george zimmer marn and his wife.

later in the week we anticipate there's going to be another, quote, unquote, document dump, that is discovery that is going to be reloosed not only to the defense but also come to the public. we may learn more about what the state has against george zimmerman. >> every discovery dump has been fascinating. 26 minutes past the hour. this week wisconsin is the center of the political universe. governors there could recall governor scott walker. how this vote could resonate all the way to november's presidential election. we'll explain that coming.

could set the tone for the national election. cnn political editor paul steinhauser joining us live from washington with more on the wisconsin contest. first, we are going to start out with brand new cnn polling on the presidential race. what can you tell us about that? >> good morning, zoraida. a favorable opinion does matter. these are favorable and unfavorables from cnn orc, national poll. take a look at mitt romney remember back in the primaries how divisive it was? look at romney's numbers rise as the primaries have kind of faded away and now we're in a general election campaign, from 34% in february to 48% now. how does he compare to president barack obama? he's doing well, but barack obama, at least our poll indicates is more popular, 56% favorable rating, 42% unfavorable. the president's favorable ratings have been steady over the past couple months. the president doesn't do as well as romney among independents but

does do better among younger voters. put it together and check this out. this is the horse race number, the most important number, 49% for the president, 46% for romney. a three-point atd advantage. that's within a sampling error. so yes, a dead heat. >> i'd say overall that's pretty good news for romney, wouldn't you say? >> yes. his numbers deaf nightly rebound friday the primaries. >> i want to go back to wisconsin. i was doing research here. i guess we don't have governors recalled that often. this is the third one, right, in u.s. history? >> only two -- this is the third time and only two have been recalled. the last being gray davis out in california back about nine years ago. as you mentioned zoraida, a couple moments ago, this is was con. we remember what happened when the republican governor and lawmakers pushed through a bill to limit collective bargaining for members. >> a huge mess.

>> huge mess. that is how we've got here today. but this is much more than a wisconsin story. that's why you're seeing top high profile surrogates like bill clinton who was with the mayor there, tom barrett. you're seeing a lot of top surrogates in the republican side. why? this has become a national story. almost like a dry run for the race for the white house. this is so rare we have a statewide contest. you're seeing both sides, independent groups, tea party groups, progressive groups, unions, flooding the zone with money. everyone is taking a look at this as a dry run for november. >> kind of a dead heat between barrett and walker? >> most of the nonpartisan polls put walker up, but it's very close, one day to go. >> the lieutenant governors are in the race, we may end up with a republican governor and

democratic lieutenant governor. >> she's also facing a recall, four other republicans, state lawmakers as well. all this going back to a little over a year ago. stay tuned for this, a very exciting -- >> i remember when they went out to hide, the senators in illinois, it was quite a major mess. i'm looking forward to this finally getting buttoned up. thank you so much, paul steinhauser live in washington, d.c. 34 minutes past 5:00. something pretty unusual happened on the sunday morning talk shows this weekend. think about not too many days ago president clinton was saying mitt romney's record with bain more than qualifies him to be president. that was unusual. in case you missed it, a republican is now praising president obama. what a campaign. this happened on cnn's "state of the union." virginia's republican governor bob mcdonnell was talking about his state's economic turn-around, at first criticizing the president's policies until candy crowley got tough and decided to press the mitt romney surrogate. >> did it help us in the short

run with health care and education spending, did it balance the budget? sure. does it help to really cut the unemployment rate, no. >> just a tiny bit of cred to it the president? >> sure. i think there's national policy that is have had some impact. >> that makes the sound bite. he went on to take most of the credit for virginia's low unemployment rate claiming his state would be even better off if not for the president's, quote, overburden some regulation. so you give some and you take some back. 36 minutes past the hour. a new campaign video from president obama debuting during the mtv movie awards. it features sex and the city star sarah jessica parker, taking a pij out of the george clooney fund-raising book. president obama and michelle are coming the my house for dinner on june 14th. i want you to be there, too. but you have to go to -- >> parker is hosting the fund-raiser at her new york home.

supporters can buy lottery tickets online for $3.00 for a chance to attend. a fund-raiser last month at actor george clooney's hollywood home took in $15 million in donations for the president. defense secretary leon panetta is in vietnam this morning, part of a trip aimed at strengthening military ties in asia. panetta visited a normer u.s. navy base yesterday where he explained the shift in military strategy going for ward. >> it's a defense strategy where, yes, we'll have a smaller and leaner force, it's going to be agile, it's going to be deployable, it's going to be flexible and will be on the edge of new technologies. in addition to that, we are going to refocus. we're going to refocus on the pacific because this is an area where we confront many challenges, and we'll also maintain a significant focus in the middle east as well. >> panetta is the first american defense secretary to visit the base since that war ended.

vice president biden's daughter tied the knot over the weekend. ashley biden marrying philadelphia plastic surgeon howard krein in well ming ton, delaware. the couple was introduced in 2010 by biden's son, beau. doctors are excited about a brand new breast cancer drug that say they say knocks out cancer cells in a whole new way. it's called tdm-1, combining two drugs, one that treats cancer and another used in chemotherapy. scientists say the drug appears to be superior in fighting an advanced form of cancer called her-2 positive. about 25% of breast cancer patients have that. tdm-1 is expected to be sub misted to the fda for approval this year. you can breathe easy. the cdc has come out and confirmed there is no zombie apocalypse. a zombie craze erupted over recent flesh-eating cases.

last week police in miami gunned down a man eating the face of a homeless victim. maryland police arrested a man who admitted to killing his roommate and eating his organs. the cdc says, quote, it doesn't know of a virus or commission that would rean mate the dead or one that would present zombie-like symptoms. >> did we really need the cdc for that? >> that's so disgusting at this hour of the morning. >> those stories in general have been pretty repulsive. here is a better one for you. the geek alert a. couple of space shuttles on the move. "enterprise" is making its way to its permanent home in new york at the intrepid sea and space museum. it's scheduled to ab rooif tomorrow. we'll be all over this, by the way. a space shuttle replica called "explorer" arrived at nasa's johnson space center.

that that debt crisis is deepening, but not only that, china's economy is slowing. most of the markets, though, are reacting to those disappointing numbers that came out on friday, the jobs numbers in the u.s. u.s. stock futures are down right now which means stocks here are expected to open lower this morning. the latest twist in the trayvon martin shooting case has george zimmerman back in jail this morning. he surrendered to authorities yesterday in sanford, florida, two days after a judge revoked his bail, saying zimmerman and his wife lied to the court about how much money they had. zimmerman is charged with murder ing trayvon martin. investigators don't know what caused an air tanker to crash along the nevada-utah border. two pilots in the plane were killed yesterday. they were dropping fire retardant on the flames when the tanker went down. the 5,000 acre white rock fire has been burning since friday night after a lightning strike

in eastern nevada. a very close call for another firefighting air tanker. a landing gear malfunctioned forcing pilots to execute an emergency landing at the minden tahoe airport. the pilot circled for 90 minutes to burn fuel before skidding off the runway during a dramatic belly landing. the plane was badly damaged. both crew members escaped unhurt. five bodies inside a burned up suv in arizona near the border with mexico. authorities are investigating where the deaths are linked to mexican drug cartels. they say this area is a hot bed of drug smuggling and human snugging. a feen age mother is under arrest. police say her infant wasn't in the car, he was on the roof of

the car. >> she put the baby on top of the car, evidently to get in it. she didn't realize she hadn't put the baby inside and she drove off. i cannot believe i've got another parent out there anywhere that would put their child in this situation. >> wow. i've left a coffee cup, a newspaper, but a baby? the baby was found in the middle of an intersection miraculously skill in the car seat and not injured. the mother was arrested and charged with child abuse and driving under the influence of marijuana. the baby is now in the custody of child protective services. federal health officials say a fifth person has contracted the flesh-seat eating bacteria in the southern u.s. she's an elderly woman in south carolina. she's recovering after emergency surgery where doctors removed a part of her leg. four other victims diagnosed with necrotizing fascitis.

richard dawson kissed 20,000 women. he died yesterday, he was 79 years old. he was also an actor appearing of films and most notably the tv series hogan's heroes. he made "survey says" a national catch phrase. here is sad news. silver medalist and former world champ gymnast shawn johnson is retiring. he announced yesterday her left knee injury will make competing at the 2012 summer games impossible. johnson won four medals back in beijing. all right. that is one fat cat. garfield tipping the scale at a whopping 40 pounds. he was rescued after his caregiver in brooklyn, new york, passed away. the league is accepting

>> i'm zoraida sambolin. let's get started. >> this is cnn breaking news. >> we've got brand-new information on that nigerian plane that crashed into a residential neighborhood in lagos. the director is confirming this morning that the pilot was an american. nigeria's president is declaring three days of national mourning and ordering a full investigation into this crash. all 153 people on board were killed in yesterday's disaster. at least ten people on the ground were also killed. firefighters and police were struggling to put out those flames. severe water shortages, if you can believe it. there were few fire trucks stationed in lagos. they couldn't carry enough water to the wreckage. residents were literally carrying buckets to help put out those flames. it is going to be a rough day on financial markets after that dismal jobs report on friday we told you about. stock futures for the dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 all trading sharply lower this morning.

indicating markets are expected to open down. as mounting pressure on the federal reserve to stimulate the economy here. alison kosik is in this morning. >> when you see these headlines, investors brace for slowdown, that's startling, right? so yeah, that pressure is mounting on the federal reserve to maybe do something, maybe pump some monetary stimulus into the economy, trying to give it at least a shot in the arm for at least a short time. you know, but at this point, a lot of people question whether that will do anything because it's already done something like this twice before. >> and failed. >> but you know, you talk about stock futures, you are seeing them turned around a little bit this morning. that's because of hope that the fed may step in. look how the market did at least on friday. down 278 points. at least the dow was. it had its worst showing for the year. the dow has erased all of its gains for the year.

you see that sharp drop on the right. it is startling. it wasn't just the jobs report that was bad for last week. we saw that 69,000 jobs were added in may. we also learned manufacturing is slowing. and guess what? it's an election year. guess who's seizing the moment? mitt romney's campaign manager was on tv, and he had this to say, certainly seizing the moment. >> it's not just the devastatingly weak jobs report we got on friday. it was also the revision in gdp downward for the first quarter, it's a drop in consumer confidence, an increase this unemployment claims. it's not that we don't think that this president is trying. i think that he is. it's just that his policies are not working. >> that was mitt romney's campaign manager on "this week." look what's happening in the u.s. we're obviously seeing a slowdown in europe and china. we're seeing a slowdown in jobs and manufacturing here. so there is a lot weighing for president obama and mitt romney

and weighing on just you and me. >> so any good news? >> yeah, i've got a little bit. so you know, one thing to keep in mind is that mortgage rates, they are dropping. so if you're in the market, especially if you're a first-time buy erbuyer, that's news. gas prices are also lower. oil prices are below $82 a barrel this morning. it certainly is shocking to see that level. when you follow the news like i do. but it's good for your pocketbook. not necessarily for the right reasons because we don't want to see a slowdown in the economy. so it is one of those tradeoffs. if you're looking for a glimmer of bright light on this monday morning and don't want to just look at the headlines, those are the two positives. >> down half a cent today. >> exactly. >> a glimmer of hope. thank you so much, allison kosik. also making news, a rehab center in central mexico under attack. according to a blog that publishes information about the mexican drug war. armed men entered the center

near durango late last night and fired at patients, killing 11 people and injuring 8 others. the attack is the latest in a bunch of gruesome incidents. last month authorities found the decapitated and dismembered bodies of 49 people along a highway. investigators are trying to figure out what caused an air tanker to crash while fighting a wildfire along the nevada/utah border. two pilots were killed. they were dropping fire retardant on the flames when their tanker went down yesterday afternoon. the tanker was on its second run of the day and was loaded for bear with about 1600 gallons of fuel and 2,000 gallons of water and fire retardant. the 5,000-acre white rock fire began burning friday night after a lightning strike. police in glendale, arizona, investigating a mysterious case of exploding flashlights. officers responded to reports of a suspicious flashlight in a yard on friday. that flashlight did not turn out to be a bomb, but officers say

three flashlight bombs have exploded in the area, injuring five people. the atf has put up a $10,000 reward for more information. defense secretary leon panetta is in vietnam this morning meeting with government officials in an effort to bolster u.s. ties with that country. panetta made a symbolic yesterday to camron bay. he's the first secretary to visit the base since that war ended. panetta's in the midst of an asian trip to highlight u.s. military strategy going forward. a brand-new cnn/orc poll showing president obama outperforming mitt romney on the favorability scale. let's take a look at the numbers. the president with a favorable rating of 56% among voters. romney, eight points back, 48%. the president is also outpacing mitt romney when it comes to online advertising. in the first few months of 2012, the president's campaign spent $16.4 million on internet ads.

that's a record pace and more than twice what mitt romney's spending. but romney's handlers say they plan to, quote, do a ton more advertising now that the primaries are done with. and fresh from its wall street debut, facebook is expected to of up millions of new shares. in just a few months, early investors and select insiders will be free to sell off stock. some experts fear a new flood of shares could water down the stock price even more. facebook stock is already down 26% from its initial public offering price of $38. and say hello to your new little friend. the new miss usa. >> miss usa 2012, rhode island! >> rhode island! 20-year-old olivia of rhode island crowned last night. she'll be representing the united states at the miss universe pageant later this year. she was asked to weigh in on the recent controversy over transgender pageant contestants.

it is 21 minutes past the hour. welcome back to "early start." george zimmerman's back behind bars this morning in florida. but his attorney hopes he won't be there for long. zimmerman who is charged with murdering teenager trayvon martin turned himself into authorities after his bail was revoked. the judge says he lied about being broke in april when his bond was originally set. zimmerman's lawyer plans to request a new bond hearing today. cnn's martin savidge is following all of the developments. he is live in sanford, florida. and martin, i'm a little confused here because we were all following this facebook page, and we knew that there were people that were donating money to him. how did they not know that dollar amount? >> reporter: and that is exactly why the judge has recalled, you could say, george zimmerman from being free on bond and wants him in front of him in a courtroom to explain that very issue

because you're right. a lot of people were giving money. it was widely known websites were out there. and yet when george zimmerman and his family were under oath, they said they didn't know anything about the money or how much there was. anyway, that's why bond was revoked. that's why george zimmerman showed up around 1:45 yesterday afternoon here. what was interesting is that because of security concerns, he actually turned himself into authorities, sort of reminiscent of a spy movie, a parking lot beside a highway. here is the sheriff describing that. >> george zimmerman met two members of the sheriff's office in the area of lake mary at i-4 was placed into custody, transported to the correctional facility. he is being booked and processed as per judge lester's order. he'll be held on a no-bond status. >> reporter: it was an unmarked minivan that brought george

zimmerman into the correctional facility here. meanwhile, his attorney, mark o'mara, says that he is immediately going to file today for a new bond hearing. here's what he had to say. >> he is in custody now. he's going to remain there until we get back before judge lester. if and when he grants us a bond hearing, it's unlikely he might consider it. >> reporter: what's really going to be interesting here is how long judge lester waits to hold that particular hearing because it is widely known the judge was very, very unhappy to learn about what may have been misleading information on that money. >> did his lawyer know anything? >> reporter: his lawyer says no. he didn't know how much money there was until a couple of days after the original bond hearing. so clearly what the lawyer says, and he tries to put the best face on this is that, look. there's a misunderstanding here. this was not really meant to be

market check for you now. u.s. stock futures down across the board this morning, indicating stocks will start the day lower here. still reeling from that disappointing jobs report on friday. other factors, a slowdown in the chinese economy as well as the ever-looming debt crisis in europe. bill clinton was out on the campaign trail this weekend, and he took the opportunity to clarify his recent praise for mitt romney. you might remember that the former president was on cnn's "piers morgan" last week with guest host harvey weinstein when he actually made some comments and complimented mitt romney on his time at bain capital. paul steinhauser joins me with that and how cnn polling is shaking down when it comes to the favorablity of the two contenders. >> we were talking about it friday morning. he made really big news on "piers morgan" thursday night. take a look at what he said

first. >> so i don't think that we ought to get into the position where we say this is bad work. this is good work. there's no question that in terms of getting up and going to the office and, you know, basically performing the essential functions of the office, a man who's been governor and had a sterling business career crosses the qualification threshold. >> that was bill clinton talking about mitt romney's time at bain capital. it was a little off message i think you can say. clinton made the third high-profile democrat, very high profile in this case, ashleigh, to question what the obama campaign had done in their attacks on bain capital. romney on friday thanked bill clinton for those comments. i guess clinton thought he needed to set the record straight. here's what he said in new jersey. "i said, you know, governor romney had a good career in business and he was a governor, so he crosses the qualification

threshold for him being president. but he shouldn't be elected because he is wrong on the economy and all these other issues. because i didn't attack him personally and bash him. i wake up to read all these stories taking it out of context as if i had virtually endorsed him. bill clinton setting the record straight. the obama campaign not now going after romney on bain capital anymore. they're going after him on his massachusetts record. we saw that last week. they have a brand-new tv ad out this morning doing exactly the same thing. >> the virginia governor, bob mcdonald, came out and started praising the president's policies for helping unemployment in his state before he reeled that back with candy crowley on "state of the union." it's always fun to watch when people try to be honest and then realize this could be troublesome. >> it's gone wild. >> circuits on fire. let's talk about polling. you were on fire collecting numbers about favorability ratings. >> listen, the race for the white house is more than a popularity contest. ratings do matter. take a look. mitt romney's numbers have

soared when it comes to how americans feel about him. 47% back in february, that was during the heat of those divisive primaries, now up to 48%. how does that compare to the president? go to the next one. it's getting there but the president is still more popular among americans. 56% favorable rating. what does this mean? add it all together, take a look at our overall number, the race for the white house, the horse race, the president, 49% of registered voters say they would vote for him. 46% for mitt romney. that's basically a dead heat, it's within the sampling error, ashleigh. >> i know this is parlor games and fun, but you do the sampling as well, you do the polling for the first lady and the potential first lady, too, and their favorability ratings. >> we sure do. and michelle obama, like any first lady, has a very high favorability rating, it's in the mid-60s. that's the way it is for most first ladies. ann romney, about a 40% favorable/20% unfavorable, but about four in ten still don't know enough about her to form an

it is time now to talk to 11-year-old tyler sullivan. his teacher is here, too. he's the boy who this morning will be returning to his fifth grade class with a handwritten excuse note from president obama. you may have heard the story of tyler skipping school last friday to hear the president speak at the factory where his dad works. after the speech, president obama asked tyler if he needed an excuse note. the president broke out the official presidential

stationery. and you're looking at it there. wrote, "mr. ackerman, please excuse tyler. he was with me." it is signed barack obama. now joining us, tyler sullivan and his teacher who gets the note, terry ackerman. welcome to the both of you. thank you very much. tyler, i'm going to start with you. so you were sitting, we understand, in the vip section which is right at the front. and the reason you were there was because your dad was actually introducing the president. how was he picked to do that? do you know? >> he is a really hard worker, and he was in the navy. >> oh, all right. well, that's a good reason to choose him. while you were sitting there in the front and after the president had spoken, he actually -- did he come up to you and offer something to you? how did you make that meeting? >> yeah, he came up and he asked me if he wanted an excuse note since i was missing school friday. >> and what did you say? >> i was, like, uh -- i was so

shocked, i didn't say anything. >> and so what did the president do? >> he asked a person for presidential paper or a note, paper and pencil, and he got -- he got the paper and pencil. then he started writing. >> and what did he write to you? >> "mr. ackerman, please excuse tyler. he was with me, barack obama, the president." >> how did you feel when he handed you that note? >> i felt really shocked. and i just had a huge grin on my face. >> we're watching that video right now, tyler, of you with the president. what were you thinking as he's writing this note? are you thinking you're actually going to give this to your teacher? >> no, i was, like, really? he's writing me an excuse note? that's really crazy. >> really crazy and cool.

terry, you're sitting there right next to him. and this note is supposed to be going to you. did you know that tyler was actually going to meet the president, or potentially meet the president? >> i really didn't. i knew, obviously, he was absent from school on friday. i wasn't sure what he was doing. and i found out after the fact that this all happened to tyler, which i was very excited for him. very excited. >> now, tell us a little bit about tyler and what kind of student he is. >> you know, it couldn't have happened to a better student. tyler's fantastic, gets his stuff done, very helpful in class, very respectful. just couldn't have happened to a better person. just fantastic. >> tyler, i was reading that you are a really outgoing kid, you're super smart, and normally you would tell your classmates where you're going. why didn't you tell anybody? or did you tell anybody? >> because i found out on thursday night right after my baseball game. and then i went home with my dad, and i didn't go to school,
